Obituary of Carl Edmund "Pops" Ayers

Carl Edmund “Pops” Ayers, age 90 of Wytheville, VA (in the Piney Community), crossed over to spend eternity with the Lord on February 3, 2025. He was born on December 4, 1934, the son of Edgar F. Ayers, Sr. and Lessie I. Viars Ayers. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers John and Ed and his sisters Madeline Ayers Viars, Mary Lee (Nancy) Ayers and Frances Lea Ayers. Survivors include his wife of sixty-eight years, Shirley Coleman Ayers and his son Jeff (wife Jennifer) and grandchildren Jessica, Hannah, Joshua, and Matthew. His brother Gary (wife Nita) Ayers, sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ayers, sister-in-law Shelby (husband Roy Dean) Spraker, and brother-in-law Harold Coleman (wife Sue). Honorary grandchildren include Andrew, Kylie, Weston and Thad Stoots. Also, many nieces and nephews survive. Carl was employed by the U. S. Postal Service for thirty years. He was a member of the Wythe County School Board and drove a bus for twenty-seven years. He served in the United States Army from 1957-1959 in Germany. He often told stories about his time in the military and enjoyed his service. Carl was a member of Mt. Zion Community Church in Wytheville and taught Sunday school there for many years. He loved working cross word puzzles, watching Jeopardy, reading his Bible, going to church, spending time with his grandchildren and drinking a good cup of coffee. Carl and Shirley loved to travel and visited all forty-eight of the contiguous states. He was well loved by everyone in the community and would always lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Carl never met a stranger and loved interacting with people. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Michelle, Jim, Terri, Cyndi, Harold and Sue. Also, thank you to Wythe Hospice and Larissa. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Grubb Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Mt. Zion Community Church.
