
Obituary of William Nelson Pendleton
William Nelson Pendleton, Sr passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, at the age of 84. He was in his home surrounded by his loving family. William was born in Roanoke, Virginia on April 10,1941 and was raised in Wytheville, Va.
William attended George Wythe High School and was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute in the class of 1963. During Christmastime of 1964, he met Judy Alton Leguin. William and Judy were married the following year on Dec 18th, 1965. William entered the Army and was stationed as the post engineer at Husterhoeh Kascrne Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany in 1966 and 1967. William entered the US Army Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a life-long member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
William was an active member in the Wytheville Lions Club, a long-standing member of the Wythe County School Board, co-owner of Pendleton Construction Corporation, and co-owner of Homestead Oil Corporation. William had a passion for farming and kept livestock. He loved his family and family genealogy. He enjoyed trips to Atlantic Beach with his family and to Burkes Garden with his Brother Rats from VMI. He loved collecting, cracking, and sending black walnuts to his siblings, keeping birdfeeders in front of his home and watching the many bird species, and inviting his extended family to help him on the farm.
William was preceded in death by his parents Nathaniel Willis and Margaret Tinder Pendleton, his sister Margaret Bowers, his brother Nathaniel Pendleton, Jr, his sister Patty DuPuis, his brother Mann Pendleton, and his niece Jenny Cook.
William is remembered lovingly by his wife of 59 years Judy Leguin Pendleton; his daughter Ann Kincer (Mark) of Huntersville, North Carolina; his son W. Nelson Pendleton, Jr (Tara) of Manteo, Roanoke Island, North Carolina; his daughter Berkeley Hooks (Joe) of Wytheville; his daughter Courtney Pendleton of Wytheville. Grandchildren: Mark, Jr, and Gray Kincer; William, III, Jillian, and Charleigh Pendleton; and Beau Hooks. Siblings: Elizabeth Geffert of Silver Springs, Maryland and Jane Cook of Columbia, South Carolina. Many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great grands.

The family will receive friends at Grubb Funeral Home on Friday April 18, 2025, from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. A service will take place at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, April 19th 1:00 P.M. Burial will follow at West End Cemetery. All guests are invited to a reception at Wytheville Country Club after the burial. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Felton Pendleton Scholarship Fund (George Wythe High School), St Jude’s Hospital, the Frank McGavock Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Wytheville Community College), or the Wounded Warrior Program.
