Obituary of George Randolph Martin

George Randolph “Randy” Martin, age 67 of Max Meadows, passed away on Saturday May 3, 2025. Randy was born in Wytheville on January 1, 1958 to the late Lee Temp and Ruby McRoberts Martin. He was a member of the West End Methodist Church and retired from the Wytheville Redevelopment and Housing Authority as Executive Director. He was preceded in death by his brother James W. Martin. Survivors include his wife, Sheri Wood Martin of Max Meadows; daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Kevin King of Wytheville; two grand daughters Kara and Krista King; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Bill Bishop of Staunton; Sandy and Darrell Surratt of Max Meadows; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Danny and JoAnn Martin of Radford; Bill and Kathy Martin of Meadows of Dan; sister-in-law, Suzanne Renegar and husband, Ed, brother-in-law Greg Wood and wife, Denise, brother-in-law Kevin Wood and wife, Susanna, special dog, Sally Jane; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Randy was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a man of few words, and loved his family fiercely. Randy’s granddaughters were the light of his life and they shared numerous inside jokes. His generous heart and quick wit were two of his most defining traits. Randy’s faith in the Lord was the center of his life, and that sustained him during his battle with cancer. Randy was a lifelong athlete, who loved sports, especially basketball. He was a die-hard UNC Tarheels fan. Randy was dedicated to improving the lives of the citizens of Wytheville. During his 29 years as Executive Director of the Wytheville Redevelopment and Housing Authority he oversaw the development of several new housing communities, as well as continually improving the existing housing units. He was especially proud of his last major project, Freedom Lane, which provides housing for veterans. A memorial service will be held at 6 P.M. on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at the West End Methodist Church with Pastor Natalie Drummond officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 P.M. at the church on Wednesday.
