Shirley Hines was a woman of deep faith and was devoted to her church family at First Church of Wytheville which began in the living room of her home. She was an active member from the start until she was no longer able to get around. Her life was a testament of love, generosity and faith in God. Shirley visited the sick and shut-in in homes, hospitals and rest homes taking them food or a Bible scripture to cheer them. She was also well known for her good cooking, and she continued to cook and entertain family and friends especially during “Home Coming” the 3rd Sunday in August every year, if you are familiar with this, can you help us with a resounding “Amen”. Her devotion to God, food, hospitality and laughter brought joy to gatherings both big and small. She had a passion for decorating and crafting and enjoyed quilting with her friends. In her younger days, it is said she was a woman with a “Mahalia Jackson” voice and was often invited to various churches blessing them with her anointed gift of singing.
Everyone who met her became part of her extended family-She lovingly adopted so many as a brother, a sister, a daughter, or a son in spirit and her favorite thing to say after someone told her they loved her was, “I love you more.” Shirley’s legacy of kindness, warmth and unwavering love for life has truly impacted on everyone she encountered; with fond remembrance, she will be greatly missed.
