Hazel Irene Mathena age 88 of Clendenin, WV, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025. She was born on February 26, 1937 to the late John Henry and Virginia Elizabeth Kegley Umbarger. Hazel loved quilting and was a beloved mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary Allen Mathena and brother Fid Umbarger.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Brian Odell of Clendenin, WV; daughter-in-law, Virginia Mathena of Atkins; four grandchildren and spouses, Patricia and Matt Davenport of Kingsport, TN; April Spain of Atkins; Melanie and Frank Bostic of Elkview, WV and Melissa Odell of Clendenin, WV; two brothers, John Umbarger of Monterey, TN; Buddy Umbarger, VA; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 2 P.M. Monday, December 15, 2025 at the Grubb Funeral Home with Pastor Andrew Davis officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 1 P.M. until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home.
