Curtis Douglas ”Doug” Thomas of Max Meadows, VA, age77, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025. He was born on November 23, 1948, in Wythe County. He was the son of the late Arthur Porter Thomas and Eula Louise Morrison Thomas. He graduated from Fort Chiswell High School in 1967 and Virginia Tech in 1971. He was a member of the Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge #235. He served in many leadership roles in the lodge through the years. He retired from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Corrections Probation and Parole Department with 31 years of service. Later he became a tax preparer with Educators Tax Service in Wytheville, VA. Doug was a multitalented individual who enjoyed learning new things, reading, writing, playing guitar, watching the Yankees, and driving sports cars.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra Layne Thomas. He is also survived by sister in law Joan Hardin of Wytheville and sister-in-law Sue Coleman (Harold) of Piney; brother in law Mark Layne (Kaye) of Wytheville, nephews Jimmy Hardin (Mary) of LaCrosse, VA and Howie Coleman(Cyndi) of Piney, nieces Jennifer Bailey (Chris) and Beth Ann Grizzle (Darrel) and great nephew Jon Hardin (Lindsey), great nieces JoBeth Hardin (Stuart), Ellie Grace Bailey, Madison Coleman, and Lauren Snavely. He also is survived by his cat John Henry. Special thanks to neighbors Wayne and Iretta Umberger, Bobby and Elaine Thomas, Dean Wright, and Eddie Stoots for their help over the last year as Doug’s health declined.

A graveside service will be held 2 P.M. Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at West End Cemetery with Rev. Leon Alley officiating. Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge #235 will conduct graveside rites.
