Katherine H. Tarter Obituary

KATHERINE H, TARTER, November 18, 1927 - December 22, 2025

As a young girl, if she was not galloping across the field on a white pony, she was climbing the maple tree in the front yard. She was Katherine Haines Tarter, the fourth of what was eventually the five daughters of John Bourne Tarter and Hope Davidson Tarter. Katherine was born in Wytheville, Va. in November 1927. She died in the year 2025. She graduated from Wytheville High School as the president of the senior class of 1945 and was captain of the girls basketball team and the girls softball teams.

Katherine was a graduate of the Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University) where she received her BS Degree. She pursued a career in education as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor, and a secondary school administrator. She received her master’s degree at Pennsylvania State University.

She was predeceased by her parents, four sisters and four brothers-in law: Margaret Tarter Rubush (Robert); Virginia Tarter Watts (John); Hope Tarter McGehee (Edward); and Jean Tarter Davis (Alexander). She was also predeceased by a niece and namesake, Susan Haines Davis Zammit, formerly of Wytheville, Va. She is survived by a niece, Sarah Hope Rubush, of Roanoke, Va., a niece, Rebecca Davis England (Thomas) of Dublin, Va., a niece, Deane Davis Groseclose (Thomas) of North Carolina. Also surviving are numerous other nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great, great nieces and nephews residing coast to coast throughout this great country. Also surviving are hundreds of former pupils and students who contributed to thirty-eight years of pleasurable and rewarding coaching and teaching-- and some few who did not!! They called her Miss Tarter, but she did not miss much.

Miss Tarter was a sixty year plus member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and was a past president of the Epsilon Chapter (MD). She was a member of the Anne Arundel County (MD) Retired School Personnel Association, and a member of the Stuart-Wilderness Road Chapter of the NSDAR (VA).

Miss Tarter was a world traveler and enjoyed saying, "I have seen the sun rise and set on six continents. The one we live on is the best…treat it with care.” In addition to traveling, she enjoyed creative writing, photography and sports, reading and sharing her wit and humor with others.

The family wishes to thank Lakeia and Teresa, two very special women whose loving care enhanced Kay’s health and joy in recent years.

There will be no visitation, and family services will be at a later time at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Wytheville, Va. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.grubbfuneralhome.com
