Mary Margaret Waddell Hancock was born January 14, 1944, in Wythe County, Virginia to parents Mary Edith Eastwood Waddell and Ira Frances Waddell, Sr., passed away February 2, 2026, while in Hospice Care at Mountain Laural Rehab and Nursing in Rural Retreat, Virginia after a long hard battle with Cancer.
Mary was preceded in death by both parents Mary and Ira Waddell of Wytheville. Also, by her sweet baby boy Kenneth Wayne Hancock who passed in Lynchburg Hospital in 1971 at age 3. She was preceded in death by her siblings three brothers John Waddell of Speedwell, Virginia, Ira "Skinny" Waddell of Wytheville, Virginia and Mason Waddell of Ashland, Kentucky and two sisters Martha Waddell Williams of Fries, Virginia and Edna Waddell Bass of Wytheville, Virginia.
Mary was survived by and was a loving Mother and living Angel to her daughter Mary Lenette "Lynn" Hancock Young and son-in-law John Kenneth Young of Crockett, Virginia. She is survived by and was blessed with three Grandsons Wesley Scott Cook of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Thomas Duane McPeak of Wytheville, Virginia and Anthony Dale McPeak of Crockett, Virginia. She is also survived by and loved two Great Grandsons Xander McPeak of Falling Waters, West Virginia and Dylan McPeak of Hagerstown, Maryland.
She was also blessed with two long-time dear friends Jeff and Trish Kyle of Wytheville, Virginia.
Mary graduated from George Wythe High School class of 1962 and went on to become a dedicated and compassionate caregiver, giving over 28 years of her life as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Wytheville Hospital and Sanitarium, at Edgemont Care Center, Wythe County Community Hospital and Homecare of SW Virginia, comforting patients with a gentle heart and tireless hands. She viewed her work not just as a job, but as a calling, often treating her patients like family. She was a loving nurse, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who "lit up every room she entered".
Funeral service will be held 2 PM Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Reverend Derek Cowan. The Family will receive friends Saturday from 1 PM until service time. Burial will be a private service for the immediate family at a later date at Red Oak Cemetery in Ceres, Virginia. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.grubbfuneralhome.com
