William Lewis Wood (86) of Bland County, Virginia died peacefully in his sleep on February 26, 2026.

He was born on January 2, 1940 to Henry Wood and Helen Snead. He enlisted in the Army after High School. He met and married the love of his life Ruth Lechliter Wood on March 28, 1959. He was a contractor and owned his own businesses. He was an avid train collector, gardener, and loved his roots and home in the mountains. He loved caring for his dogs, chickens and pheasants throughout his life. He enjoyed reading scripture daily. He had a strong Christian faith as a Southern Baptist. He enjoyed singing hymns and being around family and friends whenever possible.

William was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Ruth “Baby” L. Wood, Father, Henry Wood, Step-Mother, Loine Wood, Mother, Helen Chisolm, Step-Father, Buck Chisolm, Brother, Ronald “Ronnie” Wood, and Step-Brother, JC Humphries. He is survived by his Fur Companion, Dixie Rae Wood, Son, C. Edward “Chump” Wood, Daughter-in-Law, Karen Wood, Grand-daughters, Jennifer Hinkston (William) and Ashley “Bright” Lowery (Monty), Great Grandsons, Edward Wood and Tyler Zeeger, Brother, Charles E. Wood, Sr. (Joanne), and Step-Sister, Virginia Dare.

Visitation for William L. Wood will be at Grubb Funeral Home, located at 215 S 6 th Street, Wytheville, Virginia on Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment will start at 2:00 p.m. (please arrive between 1:30-1:45 p.m.) at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, located at 5550 Bagging Plant Road, Dublin, Virginia 24084.
