James “Jim” Willard Correll, 86, of Wytheville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026. Born on March 20, 1940, in Floyd County, Virginia, he lived a life defined by service, dedication to family, and quiet strength.
Known as “Willard” to many in his hometown, Jim was a devoted husband to Earline Correll and a proud and loving father to Jackie Correll Murphy. He served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps for four years, earning two Good Conduct Medals and achieving the distinction of Expert Marksman. His respect for the military and those who serve remained with him throughout his life.
After his military service, Jim dedicated his career to public safety and community service. He served as a deputy in Patrick County, later working as an investigator in the Enforcement Division for the State Corporation Commission. He went on to serve as a Virginia State Trooper until his retirement and then continued his service as a deputy in Wythe County before retiring a second time. Through these roles, he earned a reputation for integrity, fairness, and a steadfast commitment to the communities he served.
Jim was a member of the Wytheville Church of Christ and The American Legion.
Though he never sought attention, Jim’s life left a lasting impact on those around him. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and strong moral character. He also had a wonderful sense of humor and was well known for his practical jokes, bringing laughter to family and friends. A skilled handyman, Jim could fix nearly anything and took great pride in maintaining a beautiful yard.
Jim enjoyed watching basketball and NASCAR, and one of his fondest memories was being part of the Stuart High School championship basketball team coached by the legendary Charlie Moir.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jason Murphy, and his brothers Tommy, Joe, and Curtis Correll.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Earline Correll; his daughter, Jackie Correll Murphy and her husband, Tom; his grandson, Blane Murphy; and his great-granddaughter, Mariah Jade Murphy. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Belcher and her husband, Tip Belcher; his brother, Kenneth “Bill” Moir Correll; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
