I'll never forget the first time I met Cheri. It was early spring and I was burning brush at Steffy Cemetery across the road from Cheri's place. Since it was early spring and there was a lot of dead and dry grass around some of the metal t-posts up at the cemetery on my land. As the fire got going it quickly got away from me and started out into the hayfield. Needless to say, I was in trouble and had to run to the nearest house to call the fire department. Cheri's was the closest place I could think of and thank goodness she was home. Mind you this was well before cell phones were a thing. She got ahold of the Rural Retreat fire department and then came up herself to help me put out the fire. I recall she had on nice house shoes but that didn't stop her. Thank you, Cheri. Wish we would have had more time to spend with the horses. Perhaps in the next life.
