Alfred Gleaves Cassell Obituary

Alfred Gleaves Cassell, age 89, passed away at Wythe County Community Hospital surrounded by his family on May 17th, 2023. He was born on July 7, 1933, in Wytheville, VA, to the late John Caddell Cassell and Pearl Green Cassell. He is also preceded in death by his son, Mickey Todd Cassell, brothers Robert, Ralph, Fred, James and Ray Cassell and sisters Alma Johnson, and Lila Archer, and great grandson, Maverick Braxton-Wayne Robert. Alfred is a veteran of the United States Army and Master Mason of the Wytheville Fraternal Lodge. After his service as an Army corporal, he started his early career as the janitor of the newly constructed George Wythe High School. In 1956, he met Lucille Ingo, and they married on May 3, 1958. In 1962, he accepted a new job with Meadow Gold and is well-known all-over Wythe and Bland County as the “Milk Man” where he proudly delivered milk to private homes and businesses for 30+ years. After retirement, he spent his time in the garden, watching sports and enjoying some of his favorite Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune episodes.


Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years Lucille Ingo Cassell, Son and Daughter in law, Gary and Mary Cassell, Daughter, Lanette Cassell, Granddaughter, Kelsey and Michael Robert. Brother, Douglas Cassell, Brothers-in-law and Sisters-in-law, Geraldine Coleman Cassell, Dorothy Ingo Dean, Danny and Nancy Ingo Scott, Gene and Shirley Ingo. Several Nieces and Nephews.


The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 20, 2023, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Grubb Funeral Home. A funeral conducted by Reverend Ted Anders and Reverend Aubrey Whitlow with Masonic rites will be on Sunday, May 21, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Fairview Methodist Cemetery with Military rights. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made for cemetery maintenance to Fairview United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 450 West Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.
