Obituary of James Ellis Guynn, Sr.

James Ellis “Bud” Guynn, Sr., age 95, of Wytheville, lovingly called “Pap” by his sons, passed away Thursday June 16, 2016. He was the son of the late Floyd Brown and Lillie Corvin Guynn. He was born in 1920 the youngest of five children. Mr. Guynn was preceded in death by three sons, Floyd (Eddie) Guynn, Jerry Lee Guynn, James Ellis (Buddy Boy) Guynn, Jr.; one granddaughter Stephanie Guynn; one grandson, Douglas James Guynn; his siblings Kelly and Bunk Guynn, Georgie Guynn Grubb and Theodora(Ted) Guynn. Bud married Rachie Whisman on October 14, 1939, served in the US Army in WWII, received an honorable discharge and moved from their hometown of Wytheville to Boyds, Maryland to find work to support his family. He worked on a family member’s dairy farm and several other jobs to keep his family afloat, staying in Maryland for 40 years. In 1986, a train derailed & destroyed their house, the Guynn’s were blessed and only received scratches & bruises but decided to move back to Wytheville. Bud had a love for Harley Davidson Motorcycles and passed it on to his sons; something that remains in the family even today. Bud loved to hunt, fish and even in his later years, went to gun shoots with friends. He belonged to the American Motorcycle Association and the American Legion. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him. He is survived by his wife, Rachie T. (Tot) Whisman Guynn of Wytheville; son, Douglas Dean Guynn & Mary of Florence, SC; special sister-in-law and caregiver, Jettie (Sis) & Fred Taylor of Wytheville; grandson, William E Guynn of West Virginia; granddaughters, Angie Guynn of New York, Messie Demory of Maryland, Dawn Werking of Maryland; 4 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral service will be held at 1P.M. Monday June 20, 2016 at Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by The Reverend Preston Sartell and The Reverend Wade Whisman with interment to follow in the West End Cemetery. American Legion Post # 9 will conduct military graveside rites. The family will receive friends Monday from 12 noon until service time. Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
