With his calm presence and willingness to listen, Robert was an excellent leader at RU. The last time I spoke to Robert, I was having trouble with a student, and he offered some assurance and practical advice, but what I remember most about the conversation is Robert's generous smile and how we shared a laugh about the gray in my facial hair. I also remember Robert as a fellow graduate school student, a class Paul Witkowsky taught. I looked up to Robert because, like me, he had a Southern accent and a working-class background, but he could illuminate dense theories (and make them less intimidating) with a few precisely chosen words. Robert no doubt had a tremendous impact on everyone's lives he touched. More than most of us, he was a truly caring, generous person; and more than most of us he was one of a kind.

Robert was one of those rare individuals able to achieve the highest levels of academic achievement without acting like it was some big deal. His healthy skepticism, sense of humor and easy laugh made him a great guy to be around. Above all, he loved and enjoyed Kathy and his kids. Ginny, Grace and John Robert were a great source of pride and joy for him. He was a good friend and I will miss him.

In a profession that can attract some unusual personalities, Robert was a refreshing blend of common sense, kindness, approachability, and humor. And, we both love Ford Mustangs. He was a great colleague and I have a lot of affection for him. I will miss him very much.

I'm truly sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Williams. He held a special place in my heart throughout my time in Radford. He served as my mentor, advisor, professor, and dear friend during all four years. Our countless meetings and shared laughter are memories I'll forever treasure. On my graduation day, he stood proudly before me and said, "Well, you did it! You've finally made it through!" His unwavering support meant the world to me, and I'll forever hold it close to my heart.

I’m certainly sorry to hear of Robert’s passing. He and his Dad were amazing machinists and welding experts, and they loved old Ford products. Lots of knowledge between them, and they were excellent teachers. I always enjoyed their stories of experiences with their craft. And look at Robert’s expertise in the teaching world

I loved having him as a professor while earning my BS in English at RU. I had him for a few classes. I continue to use what he taught me in my own teaching now- particularly spelling with students. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Robert Williams, it was always hard for me to get used to that because you were always Bobby in my mind . It was rare but very enjoyable when you and I could stop for a few minutes at work and catch up, telling old stories and tales of high school days. I remember you getting a big charge out of spilling the beans to your staff on how I slid through Mrs. Austin‘s English class senior year. Your presence will be missed daily. Kathy, my condolence to you and the family. I truly share your grief.

Dr. Williams as an amazing instructor and boss. He would always be patient with me and accommodate my needs. I’ll always remember how hard he tried to get my work visa. My condolences to the family.

I was a student of Dr. Williams many years ago. We later became colleagues at RU. Among Robert’s many talents was that of a thoughtful listener. Anytime we ran into one another, whether on campus or in our shared town of Wytheville, he took time to ask how things were going for me and actually truly listened and cared about the response. I think that’s such a rare quality these days, particularly for someone with so many responsibilities. I will forever remember Robert as a patient instructor and a caring and encouraging colleague. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. His loss will be felt deeply at RU and beyond for much time to come.

Dr. Williams was incredibly wise, and he was a talented instructor. He remains a positive influence my life—he helped me remember my worth in my work, and he made me believe in my ability to achieve my dreams in the future. His trick questions during lectures were one of my favorite instruction methods at Radford University, and he also taught me everything is connected by the world around us. No one else in the department knew where Nottoway County was except for him!
I am in endless gratitude to Dr. Robert Williams’ loved ones, and I am wishing all of his dear family, friends, and colleagues well during this difficult time.
