Obituary of Robert William Hunley

Robert William Hunley, 85, died at his home in Rural Retreat, Virginia on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. Bob never met a stranger and was known for his never-ending sense of humor, and storytelling, his love for his country and his family. Bob retired from the military after 24 years of service in the Virginia Army National Guard. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #9. Bob worked several jobs during his career starting as a driver for Toms under the direction of the late Dr. Campbell. He worked for many years at Sears in Wytheville and the TRW from where he retired. Bob’s stories ranged from his times driving the peanut truck to his adventures in the military and every crazy encounter in between. After being the life of the party anywhere he went, Bob married the love of his life, Emily Josephine Snider in July of 1976. They had been married for 46 years. The couple never had children but made a point of playing a large role in the lives of all their nieces and nephews. Bob was proceeded in death by his mother, Helen Hunley, his sister, Mary Lee Mabe, his brother, Jack Hunley and more recently, his wife, Emily (Josie/Josephine). Bob is survived by his sister, Linda (Gary) Green of Knoxville TN, Nieces and Nephews, Heather (Nick) Kapranos of Wytheville, Va; Mike (Kim) Mabe, Wytheville, VA; Jamie (Lisa) Mabe, Max Meadows, VA; Lorrie (Jeff) Malcome of Chattanooga, TN; Wendy (Lee) Williams of Bartlett, TN; Debbie Boone of Winston Salem, NC; Michael Snider of Lawsonville, NC; Lonnie (Renee) Snider of Lexington, NC; Angie Wilson of Mount Airy, NC; Kurt Pruitt of Meadowview, Va; Shane (Becki) Snider of Rural Retreat, Va; Johnny (Alice) Snider of Rural Retreat, Va. Several Great Nieces and Nephews also survive. A special thanks to Cassie Jenkins, and ‘Cotton Top’; Kassie Hawthorne, (Ava, and Charlotte); Missy Hawthorne and Martha Hagy. Without you, Bob would not have been able to remain at home during his last days (as he wished). Many thanks also go to Wythe Hospice for their knowledge ongoing support. A visitation will be held Tuesday July 9, 2024, at 10 A.M. with a Service following at 11 A.M. Services will be held at West End Methodist Church in Wytheville where Bob and Josie were married.
