Obituary of Donald Seagle Scott

Donald Seagle Scott, son of the late S.A. and Mabel Scott, died 24 July, 2024 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Hospital in Salem, Virginia at the age of 94. Don grew up at the Wytheville Fish Hatchery where his father was superintendent. He graduated from Wytheville High School, then attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the Cadet Corps. Don went on to the U.S. Air Force where he served four years during the Korean War. He spent most of his service at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida working on large missiles. He was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant, receiving the National Defense Service Medal for service during specific periods of armed conflict or national emergency, and the Good Conduct Medal for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity in active Federal military service. Back in Virginia, Don went to work for Norfolk and Western Railroad, first as a fireman on steam engines and later as an engineer on diesel locomotives. Don was employed by the railroad for 35 years. During his time on the steam engines, he was photographed by O. Winston Link whose work is housed in a museum in Roanoke, Virginia. One of those photographs appeared on the cover of an album of train sounds. Don also engineered a commemorative steam engine touring the area for the nation’s Bicentennial. When he had time, Don could turn his talents to a variety of projects in wood, metal, mechanical and even electronic items, building everything from bookcases to calculators. He was described as a ‘Jack of all trades.’ In his retirement, Don enjoyed shooting skeet with friends and operating his ham radio. Don is survived by his daughter and her family including two grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. A private family service will be scheduled for a later date.
