Obituary of Katherine Jean Bloomfield
Katherine Jean Bloomfield passed away peacefully at home in Wytheville, surrounded by her family, on Sunday morning, September 1, 2024.
Kathy was born on February 24, 1947, to Reginald and Alice Mays in Bluefield, WV. In 1967, she married Mark, her high school sweetheart, and they recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. After moving several times during their early years together, they eventually settled in Wytheville, where they made their home.
Lovingly known as Emmy by her family and many others, Kathy will be remembered for her love of music—especially The Beatles—her passion for reading, and her joy of baking. She shared all of these interests with her grandchildren, who will carry on her legacy. Her sense of humor and contagious laughter brightened the lives of everyone around her. As an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Emmy cherished working with her church friends to organize and run the annual ABC sale, an impactful fundraiser for community outreach. She was also blessed with a wonderful group of friends, particularly her “Coffee Group,” with whom she shared countless memories over weekly coffee gatherings and trips.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her devoted husband, Mark; her children Jody (Sherrie), Kevin (Allison), and Kristin; her grandchildren Trey (Sarah), Madison, Campbell, Grayson, and Tyler; her brother Clyde Mays; and her nephew Keith. Kathy’s family and friends will always remember the joy, love, and warmth she brought to their lives.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 7 at 3:00 P.M. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wytheville, VA. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 P.M. until the start of the service. In celebration of her vibrant energy, the family is asking attendees to wear bright colors, as you would on Easter Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Wytheville.
