Obituary of James Theldon Burnette
James Theldon Burnette, 64, passed away on November 7, 2024, after his battle with cancer, surrounded by family at his home in Garden City, South Carolina.
Theldon was born in Richlands, VA, to James Ralph Burnette and Phyllis Cox Burnette, on June 29, 1960. He proudly served in the Navy from 1978-1982 on the USS Enterprise and USS Nimitz followed by the Army Reserves from 1982-1986. He studied the Bible at Boyce College a school of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He dedicated much of his life to serving the Lord in churches across the country, engaging in mission projects, and various chaplain roles. His experiences shaped a lifelong dedication to service, both in uniform and in his spiritual community.
He is survived by his loving wife Karen Burnette, and his children Alicia Grant (Joe Whitaker), Joshua (Kate) Burnette, Bethany (Wesley) McAlhany, as well as five grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother Keith (Khristy) Burnette. He is further survived by other relatives and friends. Theldon is preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Phyllis Burnette, sister Patty Jones, and brother Michael Burnette.
Theldon’s celebration of life will be held at Grubb Funeral Home on November 11, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Aubrey Whitlow. A visitation will take place from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Community Cemetery in Wytheville, Virginia.
