Obituary of Margaret Frances Halsey Callahan
Margaret Callahan
June 8, 1925 - April 29, 2018
Margaret Frances Halsey Callahan, age 92, of Wytheville, VA was born June 8, 1925 and called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, April 29th, 2018 at Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg, VA.
Margaret was a devoted member of Fairview United Methodist Church in Wytheville, located just up the road from Fielden-Bell Farm, her beloved home of 67 years. For 30 of those years, Margaret worked in the cafeteria of Scott Memorial Middle School, a job in which she took great pride. She loved to listen to gospel music and work in her yard. Red begonias were her favorite flowers. Frugal throughout her life, Margaret was incredibly generous when it mattered the most; she always did anything and everything she could to help those in need. Remarkably, though she never drove a day in her life, Margaret somehow managed to become an expert backseat driver and may very well have missed her calling as a Driver’s Ed instructor!
Margaret is predeceased by her husband, John Clayron (“Jake,” “J.C.”) Callahan; her parents, Sanders & Ada Halsey; four brothers (Logan, Edgar, Harold & Howard) and one sister (Ruth). Leaving to cherish her memory, Margaret is survived by her children, Rev. Jeffery C. Callahan (Mickey) of Wytheville and Mattie C. Ward of Pearisburg, VA; three grandchildren, Stacia C. Houchins (Nathan) of Wytheville, Justin E. Callahan of Dallas, NC and Carson D. Ward (Leslie) of Roanoke, VA; six great grandchildren, Brock, Creighton, Luke, Leia, Ella & Charlie; a sister-in-law, Laura S. Halsey of Wytheville; special friends Bill Malashevich, Shirley Ashley, Sylvia Archer and Steve & Teresa Hardin, all of Wytheville; a special niece, Mattie Belle Walters of Wytheville and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family wishes to thank the staffs of Wythe Circle Home Care, Carillion New River Valley Medical Center, Heritage Hall Rich Creek and Carilion Giles Community Hospital for their care and compassion in the final days and weeks of Margaret’s life.
Funeral service will be held 3 P.M.
