Obituary of Betty Jean Crockett

Betty Jean “B” Hammack Crockett, 83 of Wytheville passed away at home on February 22, 2016 after a long eight year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was born in Lawrenceville, Virginia on May 1, 1932. She was preceded in death by her parents Bessie Keeton Hammack and Joseph Willard Hammack, two brothers James Marshall Hammack and William Lucien Hammack and one step daughter Angela Denise Crockett. “B” was a James Madison University graduate and a very dedicated librarian and school teacher. She loved teaching the young students in the Wythe County School System for over 35 years. She taught at Jackson Memorial High School, George Wythe High School, Scott Memorial Middle School, and Fort Chiswell High School. She has been a member of the Chi Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma Society for 55 years and has been a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church for 60 years. She is survived by her husband of 24 ½ years Charles Graham Crockett, daughter Kathrine Reid Turpin of Virginia Beach, son and daughter-in-law David Browning Turpin and wife Gail Peterson Turpin of Hillsville, stepdaughters Valerie Jeanne Crockett of Arlington, TX, Renee Crockett of Garland, TX, Michele Crockett Thompson and her husband Ethan Tobie Thompson of Double Oak, TX, step-granddaughters, Emily Nicole Thompson, Natalie Elise Thompson of Double Oak, TX, Jennifer Holderfield and husband Chris Holderfield of Galax and step-grandsons Michael D. Bell of Burbank, CA, Mathew D. Bell of Sulphur Springs, TX, step-great-grandchildren Seth Holderfield and Sara Holderfield of Galax, God children William Michael Stuart of Indian Rocks Beach, FL, Katherine Paige Stuart of Marion, Elizabeth Ann Stuart of Charlotte, NC and their parents Mickey and Margie Stuart and many dear friends. Funeral service will be held 11 AM Friday February 26, 2016 at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church, with interment to follow in the West End Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday February 25, 2016 from 6 to 8 PM in the church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to the Presbyterian Children’s Home of the Highlands, 425 Grayson Road, Wytheville, Va. 24382 or to the Wytheville Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 285 Church Street, Wytheville, Va. 24382. Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
