I wroked with Maxine Waller at SERCAP from 2001 until she retired in 2013. She was a special person. Her enthusiasm was endless and infectious. When she spoke everyone listened as she had words of encouragment and wisdom. On one of my trips to Virginia from South Carolina, I detoured to Ivanhoe VA for the first time. I met Maxine and her staff at the Civic Association office. It was a special time. My parents were from Roanoke so I always loved to connect with my roots in SW VA. Maybe I have connections to Wythe County and Ivanhoe. Rest in peace Maxine. You will be missed. Bob Britts

I wrote several stories about Mack in The Roanoke Times in the late 1980s and early 1990s and became her friend. I loved reading here from some of the hundreds of students from all over the U.S. who came to Ivanhoe to stay with her, learn how to make pinto beans and cornbread and talk country. Mack was the greatest slayer of self-importance and supremacy I ever met. She could smell a phony from ten miles away.

I was involved in the Radford University Alternative Break programs in the early/mid 90's under the guidance of Dr. Nelda Pearson. I spent about a week in Ivanhoe doing community service. The experience changed my life. I probably wouldn't be doing the work I do today without having met her and others who showed me that anybody can make a difference in their community if they just set their mind to it. I remember Maxine called me a "high-tech redneck," because being from Southwest Virginia myself, I was one of the only students who had our Appalachian country accent. I have thought about and shared that experience many times over the years. I shed a tear this morning when I saw that Maxine had passed. The world lost a good soul, but her legacy will live on. Prayers for peace and comfort for all of her family and friends.

Maxine was a joy to know, and she has impacted generations of Holy Cross students over the years with her laughter, her wisdom, and her powerful example of advocating for ones community and neighbors. She had an ability to speak to your heart, and was never afraid to express love to others. Thanks Maxine, be at peace

I was a guest in 1992 during our service in high school. I will always remember our first night there when she had me help cook and taught me how to make REAL country gravy. This world is better for having had her in it. My deepest condolences go out to the family.

I'm so sorry to hear this news. I got to know Mack (and her family) when I first visited Ivanhoe in 1992 with my St. Joe's Prep high school service club (picture attached). And then again with college friends from Loyola College in 1996. She had a huge impact on me as a young person -- I'm thankful for her life and witness! My life changed forever because of Maxine Waller. (And Tiffany!) She encouraged me to be daring, pursue my dreams, pursue peace and social justice, and help others. The world doesn't get too many like Mack! One of the bravest, kindest and funniest people I knew. I will continue to live what you taught all of us. I love you, Maxine!!
