Obituary of Betty Jennette Tinnel Matheny

Betty Jennette Tinnel Matheny, age 83, of Wytheville, passed away on July 2nd, 2021. She was born on December 26, 1937, to the late Eugene Craig and Mary Sybil Murphy Tinnel of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her son, Jonathan Eric Matheny, and her brother, James “Jim” Tinnel. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, John Erwin Matheny; her daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Chip Smith of Charlottesville; daughter-in-law, Kathy Matheny of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Kayla Matheny, Abby Smith, and Jacob Matheny; and her sister, Sandy Tinnel of Charlton Heights, West Virginia. Betty was a retired, emeritus professor of Office Systems Technology for Wytheville Community College (WCC). She worked at WCC for 27 years. She was a graduate of West Virginia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s degree and Marshall University with a Master’s degree. Betty was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and served as the Treasurer for a time. Her hobbies included spending time with her family, knitting scarves, and reading books. Betty was a longtime member of the Wytheville Baptist Church. She will be dearly missed by all her family and friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 6th at Wytheville Baptist Church. The family will have visitation from 12:00-2:00 p.m. The service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Tim Irving officiating, followed by the graveside at West End Cemetery.
