Virginia Surratt

Obituary of Virginia Rakes Surratt

Virginia “Gin” Rakes Surratt, left this world for her Eternal Home on October 9, 2021. She was born on January 9, 1931 in Wythe County to the late James and Cora Rakes. She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters; two precious grandsons, Kevin and Craig Blair. Mom was born with the love of music in her heart. Naturally, she fell in love with a man who loved music, Daniel L. Surratt, her one and only love who passed away in 1982. Mom kept the music going with family and friends. She sang in churches and she loved going to “Jam Sessions” as she called them. Playing her Autoharp and Guitar, she was glad to contribute music to all our special occasions. Everyone was filled with music, love and laughter. When Mom and Dad lived in Austinville, VA you could count on a great music event at their house with Mom and her sisters adding in a few steps of flatfooting. Gathering with her friends at “The Old Brick Church” she would sing the old hymns. Her favorite song she sang there at Christmas was “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem”. Left behind to cherish her memory are her three children, son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Sandy Surratt; two daughters and son-in-law, Debbie and Mike Holston; Janice Blair; three grandsons, Brent Coake, Brandy and Shi; Brian Coake, Vanessa; Robbie Surratt and Missy; granddaughter, Carol Surratt Crockett and Robert Yates; great grandsons, Landon Coake and Chelsey; Chance Blair; Brandon Blair; Jacob Coake; Matt Crockett and Leanna; great granddaughters, Kaitlyn Oakley and Shane; Josie Blair; Hannah Coake; great-great grandchildren, Eli and Sawyer Crockett; Scarlett and Caroline Coake; Wyatt Oakley; step granddaughter, Alyvia Shreiner; step great granddaughter, Montana Shreiner. Graveside service will be held 2 P.M. Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at the West End Cemetery with the Reverend Hal Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Darrell and Sandy at anytime. There will be no visitation. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.grubbfuneralhome.com. The Surratt family is in the care of Grubb Funeral Home.
