Obituary of Mary Jane Kelly

Mary Jane Kelly, 80, of Wytheville, passed away Friday, April 22, 2022, with her four daughters at her side. She was born July 6, 1941, in Pennington Gap, VA, the second of Harold and Ida Mae Howard Kelly’s five children. Mary Jane was salutatorian of Pennington High School Class of 1959. She, her sister Joan, and other friends, formed a band called the Co-Eds and played for local civic groups. She later graduated from Radford College, where she played the bagpipes in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade with the Highlanders Pipes & Drums. For a number of years, she operated a court reporting business in Wythe County, and also played the clarinet in the Wythe County Community College Concert Band. Mary Jane was a loving mother and devoted Nana. She is survived by her daughters Libby (Rodney) Throckmorton of Newton, NC; Kelly (Ed) Clyburn, Lori Williamson, and Abby (Dan) Wilner of Wytheville. Her ten grandchildren are: Sally Throckmorton, Capt. Stewart Throckmorton, Anna Stephenson, Vince (Kaitlyn) Hagy, Nick Hagy, Molly Hackler, Jake (Randi) Hackler, Hannah Horton, Sam Wilner, and Emmy Wilner. Her great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, are: Niles Hagy, Waylon Hagy, Sophia Sewell, Ian Willis, Roslyn Hackler, Rhylee Schneider, Namara Cook, and Isla Hackler. Surviving siblings are Joan Kelly of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Pat Turner of Roanoke, VA, Larry (Gail) Kelly of Glen Allen, VA, and Doyle (Paulette) Kelly of Rocky Mount, VA. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved aunts Allene and Lorene Kelly, and her children’s father, William “Bill” Williamson, originally of Jonesville, VA. The family will receive friends from 6 P.M. until 8 P.M. Thursday, May 5, 2022 at Grubb Funeral Home Chapel.
