Obituary of Joe Thomas Wilson, Jr.

Joe Thomas Wilson, Jr, aka “Big Tommy,” “Tommy Joe,” “Big Papa” or just Joe was born January 12, 1936, in Raysal, WVA. He passed to his heavenly home on August 31, 2022. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years Mildred Wilson, his “mommy,” Beaulah Alexander Wilson and his dad Joe Wilson, Sr, son in law Drew Crawford. He is survived by brother, Mickey Wilson, wife Jeanne, cousin like a brother, HC Alexander, son Joe “Tommy” Wilson, III, wife Rhonda, daughter Teresa Crawford, grandchildren Joe “Joey” Wilson, IV, wife Michelle, Annie ReMine, husband Jeff, Kayla Duncan, husband Tyler, Alec Crawford, Corey Crawford, wife Casey. Greatgrandchildren, Ashlynn and Jace ReMine, Landyn and Aidan Wilson, Taylor and Luke Duncan. Tommy Joe attended Iaeger High School in West Virginia where he played football. After high school, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps, “Oorah,” where he played football stationed in NC, CA and Japan. He was discharged from the Marines as a corporal. It was after this that he met the love of his life, Mildred while he was working as a lifeguard in West Va. He attended Concord College playing football and running track. Then the family moved to Maryland and Tommy Joe joined the police force in Prince George’s County, MD. After this, he started driving a bus for Greyhound. In 1978, the family relocated again to Franklin County, VA. Tommy Joe always stayed active enjoying boating, playing tennis, being a scratch golfer, rooting for the Washington Nationals, and going on Harley rides. Along with these activities he was a pilot, boy scout master and a mason. If you knew, Tommy Joe, you probably have a fun story to share. The family would like to say a big thank you to Teresa for being the full-time caregiver to her dad the last few years. If you are so inclined, in lieu of flowers, the family would ask you to consider a donation to a go fund me for Teresa as she transitions from caregiver back to the workforce. Thank you, Teresa for your Sacrifice. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with internment to follow at Mt. Pleasant Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before service at 10:00 am until service time. A lunch at Shoney’s in Wytheville will follow internment.
