Obituary of John Erwin Matheny

John Erwin Matheny, age 88, of Wytheville, passed away on November 26th, 2022. He was born on November 12, 1934, to the late William Lee Matheny, Sr. and Zela Alice Grose Matheny of Calvin, West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Betty Jennette Tinnel Matheny; his son, Jonathan Eric Matheny; his brothers, William Lee Matheny, Jr. and James Matheny; and his sisters, Christine Matheny Smallwood and Geraldine Matheny Butler. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Chip Smith of Charlottesville; daughter-in-law, Kathy Matheny of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Kayla Matheny, Abby Smith, and Jacob Matheny. John was drafted in the U.S. Army and served time overseas in Germany. He was a retired, emeritus professor of Business Management for Wytheville Community College (WCC). He worked at WCC for 27 years. John was a graduate of Glenville State College with a Bachelor’s degree and Marshall University with a Master’s degree. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching sports, especially NASCAR, hunting, fishing, and reading Westerns. John was a longtime member of the Wytheville Baptist Church. He will be dearly missed by all his family and friends. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 1st at Wytheville Baptist Church. The family will have visitation from 1:00-2:00 p.m. The service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Tim Irving officiating, followed by the graveside at West End Cemetery. American Legion Post #9 will conduct Military graveside rites. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to Wytheville Baptist Church.
