Aunt Nancy was almost a second mother to me. She was right there during all my growing up, teenage girl angst: needing a formal dress, getting hair done, doing makeup, fighting acne, changing boyfriends…. She gave me an “in-town,” second home and some laughter along the way. — and not just when she and my mom were providing “quality control” for Uncle Scotty’s newest batch of wine.
She could also be tough. I remember the warm summer night when the front door was left open for ventilation, and a man just walked in. Aunt Nancy was undaunted as she strode into the hall proclaiming in her best teacher voice, “What are you doing here? You get out of this house!” A broom may have been involved, but broom or not, the poor man ran back out the way he had come.
With Aunt Nancy’s passing, I feel a chapter has closed and an era has ended, not just for Teresa and her family and for me, but also for Wytheville.
Rest in peace, Nancy. Next time I see you, let’s have a glass of wine.
