Obituary of Donald Wright McKay

Donald Wright McKay age 84 of Crockett, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Thursday May 11, 2023. He was born in Crockett Virginia on July 16, 1938, to the late Dawson Sparks and Josephine Elizabeth Wampler McKay. He was a Loving Faithful Christian, Professional Long Haul Truck Driver for over five decades, a retired Teamster, and a dedicated Farmer. Don honorably served his country in the United States Army as a Motor Transport Operator and was a proud Army Veteran often recalling memorable moments of his time in service as a young man. Donald was preceded in death by his wife Theresa Virginia Hall McKay and his sister Mary Porter McKay Gates. Survivors include his three daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra L. McKay and David R. Sutherland of Crockett; Patricia A. and Mark S. Moore of Marion; Anita R. and Brian D. Peeples of Rural Retreat; Son, Donald “Donnie” Wayne McKay of Crockett. He leaves behind a legacy of eight grandchildren: Morgan K.W. Sutherland; Lindsey K. McKay King, Dawson L. McKay; Candice M. Moore Haga, Nathaniel M. Moore; Sara D. Peeples, Virginia A. Peeples, Andrea M. Peeples; five great grandchildren: Kaidyn J. McKay; Eli W. Haga, Hannah G. Haga, Samuel “Luke” Haga and Savannah F. Haga; Special niece, Sabrina Gates-McCarthy of Lithia, FL. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P.M. on Monday May 15, 2023, at the Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville, Virginia. Funeral services will begin following visitation at 7 P.M. with the Pastor Derek Cowan and Pastor Mike Sage officiating. Military graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. on Tuesday May 16, 2023, at the King’s Grove Church Cemetery in Crockett, Virginia.
