Obituary of David Wayne Sheffey

David Wayne Sheffey, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, transitioned from this life on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the Piedmont Hospice Center in Charlottesville, Va., after being discharged from the University of Virginia Hospital. Born on January 29, 1950, in Wytheville, Va., David was the eldest of two sons born to Dick and Shirley Sheffey. David spent his life in the hometown he loved. He graduated from George Wythe High School where he lettered in football before he went on to attend Wytheville Community College. In 1976, David married Vickey Thomas of Speedwell, Va. This joyful union produced two beloved sons, Brad and Brian. Sadly, Vickey died from an untimely sickness. With a big assist from his in-laws, David lovingly nurtured and raised his boys to be productive, upstanding men, and he took delight and pride in their accomplishments and their dignity. In 2000, David married Paula Porter and became “Daddy” to her daughters Candace and Kayla. David’s love for Paula and their girls was reciprocated in a beautiful family dynamic of support, encouragement, and love. Along with his boys and his girls, David’s pride and joy were his five grandchildren. He found joy in the outdoors: hunting, fishing, gardening, and motorcycles. His expertise on firearms was an asset to so many. With various trade skills, he held jobs at Templon, AT&T, and Lane Metal before he retired from ABB. David lived by a simple but profound philosophy: “Love God, love family, and help out where you can.” To say he will be missed is an understatement. In addition to the loving family, David knew everybody and, with a delightful dry sense of humor, never met a stranger. Naturally curious, with wisdom that springs from humility, and a love of history, he was conversant on any subject. David exemplified a servant of our Lord Jesus Christ by putting his faith in action. Although he would never toot his own horn, the family will cherish the many stories of David’s charity and assistance to neighbors and the broader community, widows, total strangers, and anywhere he saw a need. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Paula Sheffey; his four children, Brad Sheffey (Cassie), Brian Sheffey (Teresea), Candace Hancock (Jason), and Kayla White (Caleb); brother, Rick Sheffey (Vanessa); and five beloved grandchildren (Colt, Savannah, Declan, Luke, and Braddox); and a host of other relatives and friends. We rejoice with David in his homegoing yet are saddened because the world has become a little bit darker. We have truly lost one of our brightest stars. Memorial service will be held at 7 P.M. on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at the Legacy Church with Pastor Bret McCleary officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Thursday at the church.
