Obituary of Evelyn Pauline Burress

Evelyn Pauline Burress, age 85 of Wytheville, Virginia passed away on January 31, 2021 at home. Evelyn was born in Wythe County, Virginia to Raymond C. King and Mary Elizabeth (Brown) King on September 26,1935. She went to Rural Retreat High and graduated in 1952. She went on to earn a degree in Nursing from Wytheville Community College's first nursing program. During her 38 year tenure in nursing, primarily at Smyth County Community Hospital, Evelyn received many awards and recognitions for her excellence in nursing care. She always served her patients with dignity, respect, and compassion. She dedicated her life to serving others. Evelyn was a devoted Christian and served her community endlessly. Evelyn was an avid animal lover and cared for all her animals as if they were her children. Evelyn loved her family and enjoyed her garden and flowers. Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband William Ray Burress, infant son, sister Eva A. (King) Shelton, and brother C. Landon King, all of Wytheville, VA. Evelyn is survived by her sister, Mary Catherine King of Wytheville; Sister's-in-Law Donna Sue (Burress) Shuler and Phyllis Burress, both of Wytheville. She is also survived by her nieces Beverly King (MD) and Janet (Dale) Jones (Wytheville); nephews Randolph (Carol) Shelton (Wytheville), Christopher (Patricia) King (MD), Anthony King (MD), Timothy (Lib) Burress (Rich Valley), and Keith (Carol) Burress (Wytheville). There are also great-nieces and nephews: Amanda Shelton (Wytheville), Brittany McLean (MD), Randolph Shelton, Jr. (Wytheville), Adam King (MD) and Ryan King (MD), and special friends Kelly and Mark Richardsons (Marion) and Steve and Ruth Stroupe (Wytheville). Funeral Services will be held at Grubb Funeral Home 11 A.M. Thursday, February 4, 2021 with Pastor Richard Collins officiating. Interment will follow at New Bethel United Church, 879 New Bethel Road, Wytheville, VA.
